Cisco Office Extend Access Point

E-mail Print PDF

Cisco has introduced its Cisco OfficeExtend telework solution. Information can be found here: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/solutions/collateral/ns340/ns517/ns430/solution_overview_c22-523307.html

Basically, OfficeExtend is an HREAP solution that allows for an Access Point to join a controller with a DTLS connection established over the internet. No other hardware is required to setup the secure connection between AP and Controller.

1130 and 1140s can be used for OfficeExtend and is only available on the new 5508 Wireless Controller. However, this solution does require the WPLUS license for the 5508 Controller.

Cisco Web Auth Not Redirecting

E-mail Print PDF

Web Authentication and Web Passthrough is commonly used on the Cisco Wireless LAN Controller for authenticating guest users and displaying an acceptable use policy. It is a straight forward configuration on the WLAN under Layer 3 security where you just check the web policy. However, when it does not work, there could be several factors. Below is a brief overview of what to look for to diagnose your issue:

New Direction

E-mail Print PDF

I'm thinking about taking this site in a new direction. As you can probably see, I have not been able to update this site as originally intended.  I still plan to write a few articles related to common configuration or specific features/caveats but that has been put on the back burner.

My intention now is to make some flash video presentations on how to configure features. I've come across a lot of configurations that would be much easier if someone could just see how it was done. So, that is exactly what I intend to do. You should expect to see at least a couple of basic configuration videos in the next few months.

Web Authentication (and HTTPS) stops working after upgrading to 4.2

E-mail Print PDF

If you upgrade a Cisco Wireless Controller to 4.2 (or any code thereafter), and run into an issue where the web interface no longer works, this is not neccessarily a bug. The problem is that SSL v2 is disabled and by default, the wireless LAN controller uses SSL v3.    You'll find that web browsers configured only to use SSLv3 will work fine with the new controller.  Anyhow, to fix the problem, log in to your Cisco Wireless controller and type the command:

config network secureweb cipher-option sslv2 enable

Save the config and reboot the controller for the setting to apply. On a side note, this potentially effects web authentication for guest users as well the management GUI. The bottom line is that some web browsers will not display the https, and therefore the browser needs to change, or SSLv2 needs to be enabled again.

New Site for Helping with Google

E-mail Print PDF
I've decided to make a new informational website for help with Google. The site is Help Me Google!
I've learned that about 75% of the forum posts out there in the world, are easily solved by googling. So, either people either need help with how the google, or they just don't understand all of the options to googling.  I've created the site to help both users and webmasters understand what google has to offer.
Not much content on the page for now, but I'm working on it.
